THE LAST OF US SOUNDTRACK: GUSTAVO SANTAOLALLA

_______________________________________________________________________________________

I'm not usually much of a video-game girl, but the television ads for The Last of Us caught my eye. The game is cinematic in structure and cinematography, the previews evoking a small-town zombie apocalyptic narrative reminiscent of any one of the recent zombie/vampire Hollywood box-office hits.

The soundtrack was what really struck me, though. Haunting and out of place for a video game, the soundtrack was melancholic and suspenseful, ebbing and flowing from intensity to soft strains of nostalgia. The soundtrack is the work of Argentinean musician, film composer, and producer Gustavo Santaolalla, who won two back-to-back Academy Awards for Best Original Score in 2006 and 2007, for Brokeback Mountain and Babel, respectively.
